Ten Days Exploring Siena, Medieval Villages and Tuscan Landscapes
This 10-day itinerary is designed for travellers who want to discover Siena and several areas of its province without changing accommodation every night. The programme combines art cities, medieval villages, scenic roads, food and wine experiences and slower-paced days, using San Giusto as a convenient base for day trips.
Day 1 · Siena
Spend your first day discovering Siena's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the city. Begin in Piazza del Campo, one of Italy's most famous medieval squares, overlooked by Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia. If you would like to see Siena from above, climb the tower for sweeping views over the city's rooftops and the surrounding hills. Continue to Siena Cathedral, known for its black-and-white marble façade, remarkable inlaid floor and important works of art. Visit the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex, a former medieval hospital that is now a major cultural centre. In the afternoon, wander through the streets of the historic contrade, browse the artisan shops and end the day with a dinner featuring traditional Sienese dishes.
Day 2 · Monteriggioni and Colle di Val d’Elsa
The second day is dedicated to two villages that can easily be combined in a single excursion. Start in Monteriggioni, a small medieval town enclosed by an almost perfectly preserved ring of walls and mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Enter through the main gate, walk across the central square and visit the accessible sections of the walls for views over the Via Francigena landscape. Continue to Colle di Val d'Elsa, known for its crystal craftsmanship and hilltop historic centre. Walk through lanes, arches, old buildings and panoramic terraces, then stop to discover local products and specialities. The day brings together history, craftsmanship and the landscapes of central Tuscany.
Day 3 · San Gimignano and Val d’Elsa
Travel to San Gimignano, famous for the medieval towers that define its skyline and for its UNESCO-listed historic centre. Walk between Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, visit the Collegiate Church and climb to one of the panoramic viewpoints overlooking the hills of Val d'Elsa. During your visit, taste Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the area's historic white wine, or stop at one of the gelaterias in the centre. In the afternoon, return along the scenic roads of Val d'Elsa, passing vineyards, olive groves and small rural settlements. Allow time for a few stops at the most picturesque viewpoints to take photographs or purchase local products.
Day 4 · The Siena Chianti Area
Spend a day exploring the Siena side of Chianti, travelling through a landscape shaped by vineyards, olive groves, woodland and rows of cypress trees. You can plan a route through Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti, choosing two or three stops according to the time available. Walk through their historic centres, visit a fortress or castle and book a Chianti Classico tasting at a local winery. Travel slowly along the scenic roads and stop at panoramic viewpoints between villages. To enjoy the day without rushing, choose a limited number of visits and leave enough time for lunch at a traditional restaurant or farm estate.
Day 5 · Crete Senesi, Asciano and Monte Oliveto Maggiore
Explore the Crete Senesi, a distinctive area of rolling hills, clay gullies, isolated farmhouses and long rows of cypress trees. Begin in Asciano, where you can walk through the historic centre and visit one of the museums dedicated to local art and culture. Continue to the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, surrounded by woodland and striking scenery, and allow time to visit the monastic complex and its important Renaissance frescoes. During the journey, stop at viewpoints along the roads of the Crete Senesi, which are especially beautiful in the morning or late-afternoon light. End the day with a stop in a village or a restaurant in the area.
Day 6 · Montalcino and Western Val d’Orcia
On the sixth day, travel towards Montalcino and the landscapes of western Val d'Orcia. Visit Montalcino's historic centre, walk to the fortress and admire the views across vineyard-covered hills. If you are interested in wine, book a winery visit and Brunello di Montalcino tasting, allowing enough time to enjoy the experience without rushing. You can continue to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, an elegant Romanesque church surrounded by countryside, or take a short detour along the area's scenic roads. Plan travel and tastings carefully, and always make sure that the designated driver does not drink alcohol.
Day 7 · Pienza, San Quirico d’Orcia and Bagno Vignoni
Spend a second day in Val d'Orcia discovering some of its most representative villages. Begin in Pienza, a Renaissance town overlooking one of Tuscany's best-known landscapes. Walk along the main street, visit Piazza Pio II and taste the pecorino cheese produced in the surrounding area. Continue to San Quirico d'Orcia, with its historic streets and the Horti Leonini gardens, then reach Bagno Vignoni, a small thermal village built around the large pool of water occupying its main square. Stop at scenic viewpoints along the route, but avoid planning too many visits. The beauty of Val d'Orcia is best appreciated while travelling at a relaxed pace.
Day 8 · Val di Merse and San Galgano
Val di Merse offers a day filled with nature, history and legend. Visit the Abbey of San Galgano, famous for its large roofless Gothic church, where the light and surrounding landscape create a particularly evocative atmosphere. Continue to the nearby Hermitage of Montesiepi, home to the sword in the stone associated with Saint Galgano. If time allows, travel to Chiusdino, a medieval hilltop village, or visit the picturesque Ponte della Pia, surrounded by greenery. Complete the day with a short walk through the woods or along one of the valley's nature trails, choosing a route suited to the season and ground conditions.
Day 9 · Sovicille and the Montagnola Senese
After the longer excursions, spend a day exploring the area around Agriturismo San Giusto. Visit Sovicille and discover the parish churches, villas and small villages scattered across the surrounding countryside. Continue to the Montagnola Senese, a hilly area rich in woodland, walking trails, yellow marble quarries and historic sites. Depending on your interests, you can plan a walk, a bicycle ride or a visit to places such as the parish church of Ponte allo Spino and the village of Tonni. Bring water, suitable footwear and a route map. In the afternoon, return to San Giusto to rest and enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside.
Day 10 · A Slower Day in Siena and Relaxation at the Agriturismo
Use the final day to return to Siena and explore anything you missed during your first visit. You can visit another museum, discover a different contrada, enter the Basilica of San Domenico, walk to the Medici Fortress or browse the shops and artisan workshops in the centre. Alternatively, spend the morning near San Giusto with a short walk through the countryside. In the afternoon, return to the agriturismo and enjoy a few relaxing hours in the garden or by the seasonal swimming pool without planning any further journeys. It is a pleasant way to end the trip, look through your photographs and enjoy the slower rhythm of Tuscany one last time.
